This year’s Oscar nominees for Best Production Design include both period and fantasy films that were visually sumptuous and memorable. Nominees include Black Panther, The Favourite, First Man, Mary Poppins Returns and Roma. Black Panther, which won the Art Directors Guild Award for excellence in
First Man‘s production designer was tasked with designing numerous sets, including the Armstrongs’ property, the insides of spaceships and the moon landing. Mary Poppins Returns completely recreated Cherry Tree Lane and numerous fantastical settings throughout the film. Roma‘s production design was all about reconstructing 1970s Mexico, making heavy use of historical photographs.
