AFI Top 10 Movies & Shows of 2017 Released – Did Your Fave Make The List?

The American Film Institute, one of the most prestigious organizations in Hollywood, released their list of Top 10 movies and Top 10 TV shows of 2017 Thursday. Did your favorite make the cut?

On the movie side, no real shockers though I am pleased with the inclusion of The Big Sick, one of the best indie movies of the year, and Wonder Woman, just for its incredible success. The other eight are expected to get into Best Picture at the Oscars. Darkest Hour was not eligible, as a British production, but it’s bad news for Mudbound, whose chances have seemed to sink more and more with each new announcement.

For TV, I’m beyond thrilled to see The Good Place! One of the best comedies on TV, bar none. And it’s always great to see Big Little Lies and The Handmaid’s Tale.

Unlike other awards groups, AFI does not whittle down its lists and pick a winner. This means that each of the films and shows selected are essentially “winners,” or none of them are, depending on your point of view. But either way, they are an important marker that encapsulates the past year in American pop culture, and are often seen as predictive for what may be included in the Best Picture race at the Oscars.
