2017 Golden Globe Nominations: ‘The Shape of Water’ Leads, ‘The Big Sick’ Shut Out

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association released their nominations for the 75th Golden Globe Awards, with The Shape of Water leading all film nominations at seven. The Post and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri follow close behind at six apiece.

The Shape of Water had an extraordinary showing, earning nominations for Sally Hawkins, Richard Jenkins and Octavia Spencer, plus Best Picture, Director and Screenplay. The Post and Three Billboards also showed up in Picture, Director and Screenplay, with acting nominations for Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep for the former and Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell for the latter.

As for prominent snubs, the Globes surprisingly passed over The Big Sick completely, despite being predicted in Best Picture, Best Actor for Kumail Nanjiani and Best Supporting Actress for Holly Hunter. Get Out‘s Jordan Peele was also ignored for Director and Screenplay.

One of the bigger surprises was the inclusion of All the Money in the World, Ridley Scott’s now infamous production that had to swap out Kevin Spacey for Christopher Plummer. The Globes were so impressed that they nominated Plummer in Supporting Actor, plus Michelle Williams in Best Actress and Scott himself in Best Director!

Big Little Lies leads the TV nominations with six, including Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Alexander Skarsgård, Laura Dern and Shailene Woodley. Feud: Bette and Joan follows behind with four.

The Golden Globes, which reward merit in film and television, unveiled their choices for 2017, and as usual, their picks are both expected and a little bit wonky. While the Globes do not share any of the same voters as the Oscars, they are often seen as precursors due to the awards being televised, giving stars a good chance to practice their potential Oscar speech.

The Golden Globes will air live Sunday, Jan. 7 at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT, with host Seth Meyers. Check out the full list of Golden Globe nominees below.
