Oscars Announce 26 Animated Films Submitted For Consideration For 2017

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has revealed the list of animated movies submitted for the 90th Academy Awards. The 26-film list includes some of the biggest mainstream successes of the year, like Despicable Me 3, The Lego Batman Movie, Cars 3, and everyone’s favorite, The Boss Baby. There are also many lesser-known, critically acclaimed films in the mix, like The Breadwinner, Ethel & Ernest, In This Corner of the World, Loving Vincent, and Mary and the Witch’s Flower.

The list also includes films that have not yet been rolled out to theaters, such as Coco and Ferdinand, though these films already have scheduled releases. Some of the most obscure films will need at least a qualifying run in Los Angeles that allows them to compete at this year’s Oscars, and the Academy notes that some of these films do not qualify as of now.

Featured below is the lineup of 26 animated films submitted for the Oscars, up to five of which will be officially nominated in January. You can also find availability information, which I will continue updating throughout award season.

The Academy notably changed the nominating rules this year so that all members (not just those in the animated branch) can vote on nominees. This may lead to more mainstream fare getting in than we’ve seen in years past. So don’t be surprised if you see that boss baby among this year’s nominees. Just sayin’. The Oscar nominations will be announced Jan. 23.
