Independent Spirit Awards Nominations 2017: ‘Call Me by Your Name,’ ‘Get Out’ Top List

Film Independent has released its nominations for the upcoming 33rd Independent Spirit Awards, with Call Me by Your Name topping all other movies with six nominations.

Top leaders at Film Independent decide the nominations by committee, while the entire membership can vote for the winners. Membership is open to filmmakers and film enthusiasts alike; all you need is to pay around $100 to become a member of the group and make your voice heard. In fact, I happen to be a voting member of Film Independent so I am thrilled to have the opportunity to help decide the winners once again.

While this broad membership would suggest that the winners would be different from the Oscars, which are solely decided by active members of the film community, they have actually lined up with Best Picture five out of the last six years, including The Artist in 2011, 12 Years a Slave in 2013, Birdman in 2014, Spotlight in 2015 and Moonlight in 2016. So will this pattern continue for 2017? Only time will tell, but Best Feature nominees Call Me by Your Name, The Florida Project, Get Out and Lady Bird are all in the conversation for the Best Picture Oscar so it could happen again. Notably missing from Best Feature is one of the foremost films in consideration for Best Picture, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

Here are the full nominations for the 2017 Independent Spirit Awards, airing live on IFC on Saturday, March 3.
