Golden Globes 2018 Predictions

The Golden Globes are coming Sunday, so it’s time for me to reveal my winner predictions in all 25 categories! I have ranked all five nominees in each category in order of likelihood of winning, with an explanation underneath.

Best Motion Picture – Drama

  1. A Star Is Born
  2. BlacKkKlansman
  3. Black Panther
  4. Bohemian Rhapsody
  5. If Beale Street Could Talk

A Star Is Born is perfect Golden Globes catnip, with sexy stars, great music and a simple yet universal message about unconditional love. BlacKkKlansman is the only other film that could upset due to being a strong Best Picture contender.

Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy

  1. The Favourite
  2. Green Book
  3. Vice
  4. Mary Poppins Returns
  5. Crazy Rich Asians

Hard one to call, but The Favourite is British, irreverent and centers on a trio of women. Also, it’s great. It may not have received a Director nomination for Yorgos Lanthimos, like Green Book and Vice, but again, it’s just so Hollywood Foreign Press.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama

  1. Lady Gaga – A Star Is Born
  2. Glenn Close – The Wife
  3. Melissa McCarthy – Can You Ever Forgive Me?
  4. Nicole Kidman – Destroyer
  5. Rosamund Pike – A Private War

One of the easiest calls of the night. They love music stars transitioning to acting, as we saw when they awarded Gaga for American Horror Story: Hotel a few years ago, and her performance in A Star Is Born is leagues better. No one else really stands a chance, even Close.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama

  1. Rami Malek – Bohemian Rhapsody
  2. Bradley Cooper – A Star Is Born
  3. John David Washington – BlacKkKlansman
  4. Willem Dafoe – At Eternity’s Gate
  5. Lucas Hedges – Boy Erased

This certainly isn’t what I want to happen, but the Globes loved Bohemian Rhapsody enough to nominate it for Best Picture, and Malek practically IS Bohemian Rhapsody. They have an opportunity to still reward Cooper in another major category. More on that later.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy

  1. Olivia Colman – The Favourite
  2. Emily Blunt – Mary Poppins Returns
  3. Constance Wu – Crazy Rich Asians
  4. Elsie Fisher – Eighth Grade
  5. Charlize Theron – Tully

It’s between Colman and Blunt, and it really could go either way. Blunt is the type of gregarious star they love and would love to see onstage, but Colman in The Favourite is a towering performance and has more heat to win Best Actress at the Oscars. I’m thinking they go with… the favorite here.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy

  1. Christian Bale – Vice
  2. Viggo Mortensen – Green Book
  3. Lin-Manuel Miranda – Mary Poppins Returns
  4. Robert Redford – The Old Man & the Gun
  5. John C. Reilly – Stan & Ollie

While there is a possibility for Mortensen, Bale is showy and transformative as Dick Cheney in Vice, a movie they clearly loved based on leading the nominations. He’s also a bigger star than Mortensen, which matters. If Vice doesn’t win anything else, this would be a great place to make sure it wins at least something.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture

  1. Regina King – If Beale Street Could Talk
  2. Amy Adams – Vice
  3. Rachel Weisz – The Favourite
  4. Emma Stone – The Favourite
  5. Claire Foy – First Man

Tough one to call, especially with King missing at SAG. I still say she wins because her performance is so much more acclaimed than anyone else in this category, but I could see them being tempted to go with Adams, Weisz or Stone as bigger stars. Sorry Foy.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture

  1. Mahershala Ali – Green Book
  2. Richard E. Grant – Can You Ever Forgive Me?
  3. Timothée Chalamet – Beautiful Boy
  4. Adam Driver – BlacKkKlansman
  5. Sam Rockwell – Vice

This right here is a perfect opportunity for them to make it up to Ali for not rewarding him two years ago for Moonlight. Going back to the spreading the wealth argument, this is where they would reward Green Book to make sure it walks away with a win.

Best Director

  1. Bradley Cooper – A Star Is Born
  2. Alfonso Cuarón – Roma
  3. Spike Lee – BlacKkKlansman
  4. Peter Farrelly – Green Book
  5. Adam McKay – Vice

And here we have where I expect Cooper to win. Cuarón has been cleaning up with Best Director prizes all year and Spike Lee is a recognizable star in this lineup, but they LOVE actors turned directors, as Barbra Streisand can attest to when she was awarded in 1983 for Yentl when she won over the likes of Ingmar Bergman, Mike Nichols, Peter Yates and James L. Brooks.

Best Screenplay

  1. The Favourite – Deborah Davis & Tony McNamara
  2. Vice – Adam McKay
  3. Green Book – Nick Vallelonga, Brian Hayes Currie & Peter Farrelly
  4. Roma – Alfonso Cuarón
  5. If Beale Street Could Talk – Barry Jenkins

The Favourite clearly has the most clever and witty screenplay of this race, and while Davis and McNarama aren’t necessarily “stars,” that doesn’t always matter when a script is that good. I would definitely look out for Vice and Green Book considering their overall support and even Cuarón to make up for not winning Director

Best Motion Picture – Animated

  1. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
  2. Incredibles 2
  3. Isle of Dogs
  4. Ralph Breaks the Internet
  5. Mirai

It’s hard to go against the Disney pick(s) here when they almost always go for it, but Spider-Verse has such strong buzz, and at the right time during the middle of voting, that I think Globes voters will want to look cool by voting for it. Plus, it’s the best.

Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language

  1. Roma
  2. Shoplifters
  3. Capernaum
  4. Never Look Away
  5. Girl

It’s Roma. Next.

Best Original Score

  1. Black Panther – Ludwig Göransson
  2. Mary Poppins Returns – Marc Shaiman
  3. First Man – Justin Hurwitz
  4. A Quiet Place – Marco Beltrami
  5. Isle of Dogs – Alexandre Desplat

Original Score is always kind of a crapshoot, so I’m just gonna say they throw Black Panther a bone here since it’s not winning anywhere else. But it could feasibly go to anyone and I wouldn’t be surprised.

Best Original Song

  1. “Shallow” from A Star Is Born (Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando & Andrew Wyatt)
  2. “All the Stars” from Black Panther (Kendrick Lamar, SZA, Sounwave & Al Shux)
  3. “Girl in the Movies” from Dumplin’ (Dolly Parton & Linda Perry)
  4. “Revelation” from Boy Erased (Leland, Troye Sivan & Jónsi)
  5. “Requiem for a Private War” from A Private War (Annie Lennox)

It’s “Shallow.” Next. Congrats to Gaga, who, by my count, will be onstage three times in addition to her presenting segment.

Best Television Series – Drama

  1. Killing Eve
  2. Pose
  3. Homecoming
  4. The Americans
  5. Bodyguard

Now to TV! These are always decidedly harder to predict because they really do their own thing. Killing Eve is a sexy show with international flair and a cool factor, so I’m going with that one. But I could also see them wanting to make a statement with Pose.

Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy

  1. The Kominsky Method
  2. The Good Place
  3. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
  4. Barry
  5. Kidding

I have been agonizing over this category for a week now. I don’t feel good about it, but I’m just going with The Kominsky Method here because it got two actors in and it’s the newest of these shows, and we know the HFPA loves that. Personally speaking, I think it’s one of the weaker shows in this category, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they went back to Maisel or picked the buzzy Good Place.

Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

  1. The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
  2. A Very English Scandal
  3. Sharp Objects
  4. Escape at Dannemora
  5. The Alienist

Versace was one of the best shows on television in 2018 and earned three acting nominations here. Even though it aired a little while ago compared to these other shows, I think it’s pretty undeniable.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television

  1. Amy Adams – Sharp Objects
  2. Patricia Arquette – Escape at Dannemora
  3. Regina King – Seven Seconds
  4. Connie Britton – Dirty John
  5. Laura Dern – The Tale

Adams has two nominations this year, and this is the easy call for where to give her the win. One of her very best performances in an already great career. But having seen a little bit of Escape at Dannemora, don’t count out Arquette, who is very showy.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television

  1. Hugh Grant – A Very English Scandal
  2. Darren Criss – The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
  3. Daniel Brühl – The Alienist
  4. Antonio Banderas – Genius: Picasso
  5. Benedict Cumberbatch – Patrick Melrose

The HFPA loves Grant and they loved his miniseries here, so I think he just takes this. Criss is phenomenal in Versace but how can they resist the possibility of a charmer like Grant onstage?

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama

  1. Sandra Oh – Killing Eve
  2. Julia Roberts – Homecoming
  3. Keri Russell – The Americans
  4. Elisabeth Moss – The Handmaid’s Tale
  5. Caitriona Balfe – Outlander

Sandra Oh is co-hosting the ceremony this year, but even if she weren’t I would expect her to take this one. Even though her non-nominated co-star Jodie Comer outshines her on Killing Eve, Oh is magnetic as hell. I do feel uneasy about going against Julia Roberts, but I just don’t see the urgency to reward her.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama

  1. Richard Madden – Bodyguard
  2. Stephan James – Homecoming
  3. Billy Porter – Pose
  4. Matthew Rhys – The Americans
  5. Jason Bateman – Ozark

This is another entry in the sexy stars argument. Madden is a charming hunk who hails from Game of Thrones and now has a show that was nominated for Best Drama Series. I feel very strongly that voters won’t be able to resist.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy

  1. Kristen Bell – The Good Place
  2. Rachel Brosnahan – The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
  3. Alison Brie – GLOW
  4. Candice Bergen – Murphy Brown
  5. Debra Messing – Will & Grace

Going out on a limb with this one. Brosnahan was instantly iconic with her performance in Maisel, which is why she rightfully earned a whole bunch of awards for Season 1. But Globes voters really don’t love going back to the well that much, and I think Bell is so great on The Good Place and would make such a funny, memorable speech if she were to win that I could see voters picking her from this crop of non-newbies.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy

  1. Michael Douglas – The Kominsky Method
  2. Bill Hader – Barry
  3. Jim Carrey – Kidding
  4. Sacha Baron Cohen – Who Is America?
  5. Donald Glover – Atlanta

If The Kominsky Method is winning Best Comedy Series I don’t see how Douglas could lose this. He is Kominsky himself. End of argument.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

  1. Penélope Cruz – The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
  2. Patricia Clarkson – Sharp Objects
  3. Alex Borstein – The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
  4. Thandie Newton – Westworld
  5. Yvonne Strahovski – The Handmaid’s Tale

I am very bad at predicting the catch-all TV supporting categories, with my fourth or fifth pick usually going on to win (good news, Newton and Strahovski!) I’m picking Cruz because they’re gonna want to reward Versace somewhere besides Limited Series, and she’s another sexy star playing an icon, Donatella Versace.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

  1. Ben Whishaw – A Very English Scandal
  2. Alan Arkin – The Kominsky Method
  3. Kieran Culkin – Succession
  4. Henry Winkler – Barry
  5. Édgar Ramírez – The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story

I could see this going to anyone here. The reason I’m picking Whishaw is he was also in Mary Poppins Returns, a movie they clearly enjoyed, and he’s a youngish star who hasn’t really been rewarded yet in America, and wouldn’t the Globes love to be the first to really recognize him?
